Coffee is artist and writer Patti Smith’s beverage of choice, and much like David Lynch, she’s not picky. On the advice of writer William S. Burroughs, Smith travelled to Veracruz, Mexico to taste the best coffee beans in the world- but she’s also cool with grabbing a large cup of 7- Eleven and a glazed donut. Like many artists, Smith’s love of coffee appears to be more than a craving, her creative process depends on it:
“I can’t go without my coffee. I can go without drinking it, but I can’t go without it nearby. It’s the feeling of how cool I feel with my coffee. Because I don’t feel cool with this tea.”
If you’re a fan of Smith’s recent best seller, Just Kids, a memoir of her relationship with artist Robert Mapplethorpe in the 6o’s, be sure to pick up a copy of her latest book, M Train. M Train is an introspective look into her more recent years and follows Smith as she cafe hops around the world. I always enjoy the gentle bravery of her world view and reading it really, really made me want a cup of coffee.
I think Patti Smith might be a fan of Sudden for those days when she’s on the go and needs some good coffee (that’s not 7 Eleven). What do you think?
